2025. Acrylic on canvas. 18 × 24 inches.
Two imagined cliffs frame the picture plane, their warm, surreal colors contrasting with a wide open gray-blue sky and a faint, low-contrast mountain range. The different styles of the fore and background encourage the viewer to ponder questions such as "Is my perception of nature real, or just a version of what is real?”
Sometimes, when hiking, I’m overwhelmed by the beauty and freedom I feel in vast expanses of the natural world. At other times, the expansiveness can feel like a deep emptiness. This painting is part of a series that explores how humans experience nature. We may see ourselves as part of it, and also apart from it. The series invites us viewers to explore and deepen our connection to the natural world.
Canvas edges are unedited — raw in some areas, painted in others
